A photograph taken from below shows a building with a flag of Colombia hanging from the edge. The sky is blue with scattered white clouds, and there are tall trees with green leaves on the right side of the image.

About Colombia

  • Colombia — and Bogotá in particular — is largely safe for visitors and families when you follow the same common-sense precautions you’d use in any major global city. It’s a vibrant, modern capital with well-patrolled neighbourhoods, strong police visibility, and a warm, welcoming culture. Like London, New York, or Madrid, there are areas best avoided, but everyday life is calm, organised, and surprisingly easy.

Between the two births of our children, we spent several months living in Bogotá, moving around the city daily, and never encountered a single issue. Our experience — like that of many Intended Parents — was overwhelmingly positive, safe, and comfortable, and left us feeling completely at ease throughout our stays.

  • One of the things that struck us most about Colombia is just how warm and genuinely caring people are. From the surrogates who showed such kindness and emotional generosity, to the doctors who treated us with respect and patience, to the nannies who supported us like family — everyone we met carried a natural warmth that immediately put us at ease. Even in day-to-day life, Colombians are friendly, helpful, and welcoming, always ready with a smile or a kind word. It’s a place where you truly feel looked after.

  • Transportation in Colombia, especially in cities like Bogotá, is straightforward, reliable, and surprisingly affordable. Uber and other ride-hailing apps work extremely well — cars arrive quickly, drivers are professional, and the in-app tracking adds an extra layer of safety and reassurance. We used Uber daily during our stays and always found it safe, convenient, and far more cost-effective than in the UK. It makes getting around the city simple, even with a newborn in tow.

  • Spending a few weeks to a few months in Colombia is surprisingly affordable, even when maintaining a high standard of living. Modern, well-located apartments with great amenities are easy to find and cost far less than equivalent accommodation in the UK. Dining out is another highlight — from neighbourhood cafés to outstanding restaurants, you can enjoy high-quality meals at very reasonable prices.

Another major benefit is the availability of affordable, trusted babysitting and nanny support. Whether you need a few hours to rest, adjust to life with a newborn, or get organised, experienced childcare is easy to arrange and far more cost-effective than back home. Altogether, the cost of living makes an extended stay both comfortable and financially manageable.

  • Bogotá’s climate is one of its quiet advantages — mild, comfortable temperatures all year round, without the extremes of heat or cold. The weather can be changeable, with sun, clouds, and the occasional light shower all in the same day, which actually feels very similar to a pleasant UK spring. It’s the kind of climate where you’re comfortable in light layers and can enjoy being out and about without worrying about heatwaves or humidity.
