Applying for a British Passport for your newborn

  • The British Passport can be applied for upon returning to the UK and either before or after the Parental Order has been granted.

  • If done before the Parental Order is granted, then the baby will have the surrogate’s surname and the biological parent’s surname in the passport – you have the benefit of being able to travel freely keeping in mind that the Parental Order can take 6-8 months. Once the Parental Order is granted you can re-apply for a passport with name change removing the surrogate’s surname – this approach does however mean you are paying for the passport twice.

  • If done after the Parental Order is granted, then the baby will not have the surrogate’s surname in the passport. While waiting for the parental order you can still travel on the Colombian Passport but may require visa’s depending on destinations.
